PRESERVING THE GENE POOL OF LAKE MALAWI TILAPIA SPECIES
The work of setting out a breeding nucleus at National Aquaculture centre has reached its final stages. We have managed to set out a base population of indigenous tilapia with an objective of preserving the local gene pool of this highly preferred species. Malawians are fish eating people and 70% of their protein is taken from fish. Tilapia is one of the most preferred on their menus and seeking the preservation of this gene pool by local genetics is not by mistake but a must and urgent issue.
